Exercises with solutions

In brief

Each exercise shows a real position. Think it over, then open the solution. Squares are named by their column (a to h) and their row.

  • Black
  • White
  • possible move
  • disc just placed or square highlighted
  • disc that was just flipped

1. The first move

Black starts. How many moves does Black have, and how many discs does each one flip?

a1b2c3d4e5f6g7h8
See the solution

4 moves (d3, c4, f5, e6), each flipping 1 disc.

Each move flanks a single white disc in the center. All these moves lead to positions that are identical up to symmetry.

2. A corner to take

It's White's turn (move 16 of the annotated game). White has 10 possible moves. Which one does the app's computer choose?

a1b2c3d4e5f6g7h8
See the solution

The h1 corner, at every level (Easy, Medium, Hard); it flips 2 discs.

A disc placed in a corner can never be flipped. The app's computer gives corners the highest value in its evaluation.

3. A pass

White has just played move 56. Can Black move?

a1b2c3d4e5f6g7h8
See the solution

No: no move flips a white disc, so Black passes and White plays again (4 possible moves).

You only pass when you have no move. In the app, the turn goes back to your opponent automatically.

4. The biggest flip

It's White's turn. They have 2 moves: g8 and h8. Which one flips the most discs?

a1b2c3d4e5f6g7h8
See the solution

g8, which flips 12 discs at once: the score goes to 16 Black against 47 White.

A single disc placed flips the discs it brackets in every direction at once.

5. The count

The annotated game is over. Who wins, and by how much?

a1b2c3d4e5f6g7h8
See the solution

White wins 46 to 18.

The board is full: 0 empty squares. You only count the discs of each color.

6. A very short game

This game ended after 9 moves. Why, and what is the score?

a1b2c3d4e5f6g7h8
See the solution

White has no discs left: nobody can move. Score 13 to 0.

The app doesn't give the 51 empty squares to the winner: it counts the discs placed.
